2-11 - UFW04 - John15b - Fugue in D Minor
This work is not yet complete. It's the second half of 'Prelude and Fugue in D Minor'. It does follow the form of a baroque fugue, though I wouldn't really say it follows the style or feeling. In any case, it remains incomplete: I painted myself into a musical corner when I modulated into some random key, and couldn't figure out where to go from there. Although since I made this CD for Opa, I've listened to it a few times: I think I can hear it in my head now. We'll see. In any case, I decided to write it when I showed the Prelude to my then-piano teacher, Patrick; at the time, it was titled "Pseudofugue in D Minor". He commented that this was indeed very silly, and that since it was not a fugue, calling it one would make people think I didn't know what I was doing. "But it's a PSEUDOfugue", I protested, to no avail. I later decided that the Pseudofugue would make a great Prelude, and that I should then write a Fugue. Besides, when I said (in regards to the Prelude) that Robin was always a better player than me, what I left out was that I, in my teenage state, was fiercely jealous of this, even as I admired it. All I had for consolation was a belief, mistaken or not, that I was at least his equal at composition. He'd already written a fugue, and dammit, I could too.
